protex.one UAV completes first flight: civil defence project takes shape

The first prototype flight has successfully taken place on the new test and development site for electric and autonomous aviation at the regional airport Mengen-Hohentengen.

We tested protex.one, a new, completely emission-free long-range drone (UAV) built for highly sensitive cargo: In the ATHMOS project, the drone will carry a miniaturised infrared spectrometer, designed to precisely measure clouds of pollutants in the air, for example after chemical accidents and major fires. The measurement results will be transmitted in real time to fire brigades and civil defence units and used for autonomous navigation of the drone, for example to automatically fly around clouds.

The configuration of protex.one is based on the world-famous electric aircraft e-Genius. The unprecedented flight characteristics of this original have been fully incorporated into the drone's design, compressed to one third of its size. ATHMOS is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) within the framework of the "Research for Civil Security" programme with a grant of €1.6 million. In addition to M&D Flugzeugbau, the project participants include SIOS Meßtechnik GmbH, Gesellschaft für Bild- und Signalverarbeitung (GBS) mbH, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences and the Institute for Fire and Rescue Technology of the City of Dortmund’s fire department. Stuttgart-based Kasaero GmbH is a development partner of M&D and manufactures the UAV used.
